    Instructional designers and learning-experience designers in corporate L&D, e-learning developers who design as well as build, curriculum designers in education and professional training, L&D professionals whose role spans design and delivery, and subject matter experts asked to turn their knowledge into training.     • Design for the full range of learners from the start — Universal Design for Learning, cognitive load, and cultural fit — and protect learner data, SME confidential information, and organisational intellectual property when you work with AI.

    AI in Instructional Design Today

    AI is changing instructional design by moving value from faster content production to better design decisions, which matters for designers asked to improve outcomes under pressure. You can separate design from delivery, map tasks with the AI Opportunity Matrix, and brief AI as a design partner.

    From Goals to Learning Architecture

    This section moves from performance gaps to objectives, content maps, sequencing, and strategy because instructional designers need architecture before AI can draft useful materials. By the end, you can turn a vague goal into a sequenced design that builds capability rather than familiarity.

    Writing for Learning

    Writing for Learning turns accurate AI drafts into explanations, scenarios, analogies, and worked examples that build usable understanding for instructional designers. By the end, you can brief, improve, and gate learner-facing writing so it is specific, realistic, reasoned, and ready for a programme.

    Storyboarding and Media Selection

    Storyboarding and media selection turn a finished design into a build-ready specification and a delivery choice that fits the objective, not habit. You create reviewable storyboards, brief AI effectively, specify interactions, run scoped SME review, and choose or blend media with structured reasoning.

    Review, Iteration, and Quality Assurance

    Review, iteration, and quality assurance protect careful instructional design from vague feedback, scope creep, and untested AI-generated content. You leave able to run two-phase reviews, pilot prototypes with real learners, apply the TRUST gate, and keep revision decisions tied to the objective.

    Designing for Every Learner and Your 30-Day Plan

    Designing for every learner means naming the default, managing load, checking culture and language, protecting sensitive information, and building accessibility before production pressure begins. You leave with a 30-Day AI+You Starter Plan and one specific next action for live work.

    Assessment and certificate

    The course closes with a timed final exam with a pass mark and a limited number of attempts. A pass issues a PDF certificate with its own serial, in the name of the Straits Institute for Applied AI. Cohort progress, at-risk learners and a CSV export are in the admin console throughout.

    About this course

    Do I need prior AI experience to take this course?

    No. You bring the design expertise, and the course shows you where AI fits. If you know your way around a basic AI prompt, you have everything you need to start. AI+ for Everyone (T1-01) is a helpful foundation if you are completely new to AI, but it is not a prerequisite — the course teaches the prompting frameworks it uses as it goes.

    Is this course about designing single lessons or whole programmes?

    Whole learning experiences, at programme and module level: objectives hierarchies, content architecture, instructional strategy, storyboards, media selection, and the review cycle. If your work is session-level design — a single lesson arc, its activities and formative checks — AI+ Lesson Planning (T3-16) serves you better. This course operates at the level of the complete learning experience.

    How much time does the course take?

    Six modules of about an hour each — around six hours in total. Each module follows the same rhythm: you watch a short teaching piece, try the technique yourself in an AI chat, then practice it on a real design task. You can work through it at your own pace, and you keep the workbook and prompt library afterwards.

    What AI tools or software do I need?

    A general-purpose AI chat assistant is enough — there is nothing to install and no authoring software required. This is a design course, not a production course: it teaches you to make and specify the design decisions. If you also need to build and publish the finished course in an authoring tool, AI+ Online Course Creation (T3-20) covers that production side.

    Can I use AI with confidential SME content, learner data, or my organisation's intellectual property?

    The course covers this directly. You learn to apply a safety checklist to the four kinds of sensitive material an instructional designer handles — learner data, SME confidential information, organisational intellectual property, and regulated content — using one governing principle: share the need, not the identity. You also learn when to route a question to your organisation's data protection or compliance team.

    Will AI replace instructional designers?

    AI is a tool to help you, not replace you. AI drafts; you decide. The course is built around the design judgement that remains yours — deciding what learners must be able to do, owning the SME relationship, judging cultural fit, and making the ethical call on what gets taught. You are the boss. What changes is how fast you can move from a training request to a sound design, and how much of your time goes to the decisions that matter.
