No prior AI experience or technology background is required; if you have read AI+ for Everyone (T1-01) the frameworks will be familiar, and if not, the key concepts are recapped as they appear. ## What you will be able to do - Pinpoint at least five areas of your daily work — collection curation, cataloguing and metadata, reference and research support, patron services, and information literacy instruction — where AI can raise quality or save time. - Use the PRISM Prompting Framework to produce useful first drafts of catalogue records and metadata, reference answers and literature scans, and patron-facing communications. - Evaluate AI output to an information specialist's standard with the TRUST Framework — checking authority, provenance, currency, bias, and accuracy before it reaches a patron or the catalogue. - Protect patron privacy, uphold intellectual freedom, respect copyright and licensing, and maintain the authority of your collection with the Librarian AI Safety Protocol. - Leave with a personal 30-day AI adoption plan mapped to the Curate–Discover–Serve cycle, with measurable improvement in at least three routine library tasks. ## The curriculum Module by module, in the order they are assigned. ### AI Foundations for Librarians AI foundations for library work shows where generative AI already appears in cataloguing, discovery, reference, public programming, and vendor systems, and why librarians need a professional stance. By the end, you can locate tasks on the AI Opportunity Matrix, map Curate, Discover and Serve, and respond to library-specific failure modes. ### Prompting AI as a Librarian Prompting AI as a Librarian moves from bare requests to structured prompting and evaluation, because library work demands drafts that can be checked, defended, and owned. You leave able to build PRISM prompts for common Curate–Discover–Serve tasks, evaluate outputs with TRUST, iterate deliberately, and treat every AI response as a draft. ### AI for Curation and Discovery AI for curation and discovery shows where AI can draft metadata, support collection decisions, and prepare reference work without taking over professional judgement. By the end, you can design verified workflows for records, scans, citations, and patron-facing AI output while protecting catalogue quality, privacy, and library authority. ### AI for Service, Safety and Ethics AI-assisted service writing can make newsletters, reports, notices and accessibility adaptations sustainable, but library standards decide where the tool may operate. You leave able to encode voice, manage drift, run the Librarian AI Safety Protocol, classify sensitivity and offer compliant alternatives. ### Information Literacy and Library Sectors Information literacy turns outward as patrons arrive with AI output they cannot fully evaluate, while each library sector faces different constraints and risks. You leave able to teach AI evaluation, adapt shared frameworks to your setting, and position the library as the trusted quality layer. ### Your 30-Day Librarian AI Plan This closing plan turns AI experimentation into structured practice for librarians who need safe, defensible adoption rather than scattered trials. By the end, you can select low-stakes starters, log evidence, build repeatable workflows, and contribute to AI conversations on the profession's terms. ## Assessment and certificate The course closes with a timed final exam with a pass mark and a limited number of attempts. A pass issues a PDF certificate with its own serial, in the name of the Straits Institute for Applied AI. Cohort progress, at-risk learners and a CSV export are in the admin console throughout. ## About this course ### Do I need a technology background or prior experience with AI tools? No. The course is written for librarians who are comfortable in their professional practice but new to deliberate AI use — you do not need coding or any technology background beyond the digital systems you already use. If you have read AI+ for Everyone (T1-01) the frameworks will be familiar; if not, the key concepts are recapped as they appear. ### Will AI replace librarians? No. The focus is on applying AI across the curate–discover–serve cycle while you keep authority over the work. The course is explicit about what AI can and cannot do for librarians, and you evaluate every output against professional standards before it is used. ### How does this protect patron privacy and intellectual freedom? A dedicated module on AI safety, privacy, and professional ethics teaches the Librarian AI Safety Protocol — protecting patron privacy, upholding intellectual freedom, respecting copyright and licensing, and maintaining the authority of the collection. ### Can I trust AI-generated information such as citations and catalogue records? Verification is the heart of the course — 'the verification moment.' You learn the TRUST Framework and a Citation Verification Loop to check authority, provenance, currency, bias, and accuracy before any AI output reaches the catalogue or a patron. ### I do not work in an academic library — does this still apply to my sector? Yes. It is written for librarians across every sector and setting — academic and research, public, school and college, and special libraries in legal, medical, corporate, and government settings — and a dedicated module covers how AI applies across library sectors. ### How much time does it take to get started, and do I need special tools?
